Azure Advisor and Service Health

2 min read Quiz included

Azure Advisor

Azure Advisor analyses your deployed resources and gives personalised recommendations to improve them. Recommendations appear in the portal and through the API, and you can set alerts for new ones.

They are grouped into five categories, matching the Well-Architected Framework:

CategoryExample recommendation
Reliabilityadd redundancy so your app survives failures
Securityfix vulnerabilities and security weaknesses (from Microsoft Defender for Cloud)
Performanceimprove the speed and responsiveness of your apps
Operational excellenceimprove process and workflow efficiency, deployment best practices
Costresize or shut down underused VMs, buy reservations

Advisor is free and works out its recommendations from your actual usage.

Azure Service Health

Azure Service Health keeps you informed about the health of Azure itself. It has three parts, from the widest view to the most personal:

  1. Azure status: the global status of Azure services in every region, for everyone. It tells you about wide-scale outages.
  2. Service Health: a personalised view of the services and regions you use. It shows active service issues, planned maintenance and health advisories, and you can set alerts so you are notified when something affects you.
  3. Resource Health: the health of your individual resources, such as one particular VM, including whether a problem was caused by Azure or by something on your side.

Service Health also keeps a history of past incidents, useful for reports and root-cause analysis.
